The Yoga Sutras, along with many Buddhist texts, list brahma viharas or "divine abodes," qualities of the heart-mind that can be cultivated through practice. Cultivating the brahma viharas creates profound happiness, peacefulness and kindness in our relationships to other beings and to all our actions. Equanimity, defined as "evenness of mind especially under stress, right disposition, balance " is the fourth brahma vihara and can help us to maintain evenness and peace even under great stress. As the brahma viharas become integrated within us, they decondition qualities such as ill will, envy, indifference and negative judgments.
How can we cultivate Equanimity in a genuine way?
Do we notice how do we treat ourselves when we enter a yoga posture? Are we kind and compassionate with ourselves in the way we move while doing the dishes? In the way we get out of bed in the morning? Attending to our embodied selves is a profound way to deepen our experience of these four "transcendent sentiments" and can allow us to bring them into our lives in a way that goes much deeper than words and thoughts. This can create a seamlessness between the cultivation of our spiritual aspirations and every moment of our ordinary lives, allowing our lives to become quite extraordinary in the process.
In this intensive workshop, we will explore our own embodiment using the techniques of meditation, yoga asana, and Awareness through Movement as the ground for our cultivation of Equanimity. We'll offer practical suggestions for developing the quality of evenness and non-attachment in to your own practice and in your daily life.

Kalari yoga: introduction to the Ancient yogic martial art |
A workshop with Gerhard Schmid from Hamburg, Germany |
Time: May 30th (5pm-8pm), May 31st (1pm-5pm), and June 1st (1pm-4pm)
Cost: All 3 sessions $105, Drop-in $40
Location: Sugar House Studio- 2065 East 2100 South.

Kalari is also known as "The Tantra Yoga of Martial Arts", building its principles upon 96 tattvas that constitute our universe in the eternal dialogue of Shiva and Shakti. It developed at the junction of the indigenous Dravidian culture of southern India and the Vedic culture that migrated from the north. Kalarippayat literally means "training ground-exercise" and the term "Kalari" can used both to describe the practice, as well as the room in which it is practiced. It has been a major influence on the development of Yoga and Ayurveda and vice-versa since times immemorial.
Foundations: Surya Namaskara, Kalugal and Vadivu. The Kalari practitioner is commonly referred to as abhyasi, the repeating one. In this first session, the abhyasis will be introduced to some key elements or the practice: Grounding, steadfastness, focus, alignment, flow and expanding the sensory awareness. After set of Surya Namaskara in the Kalari tradition we will start with a characteristic nadi stretching exercise called Kalugal. We will conclude with Vadivu, animal postures.
Salutation: Puthara and Kalari Vandanam. Every Kalari class in the Vadakkan Sampradayam style will start the main practice with one form: The Vandanam. It is in this form that we prostrate in front of the seven-step-altar in the southwest corner of the Kalari called Puthara and salute the sacred space of the Kalari. The Vandanam is an ageless and beautiful flowing sequence that includes many of the animal postures, as well as a set of absolutely unique movements.
Siva and Shakti: Kaikuttippayat - Siva Pilaitangi. Siva and Shakti forms are the heart of the practice. We will start with Siva forms, often known as Kaikuttippayat. Siva and Shakti forms have different families. The family of Siva forms that we commonly start with is called Pilaitangi. This is a body form. Here powerful energy is created by focusing on male aspects: Stamina, grounding, alignment, will power and the pure and emotionless aspect of energy culminating in the transformative fury of the Siva Tandava.
Siva and Shakti: Meippayat - Shakti Arapukai. Shakti forms are also referred to as Meippayat. Our final sessions will focus on the beautiful first Shakti form from the Arapukai branch. Here the rich spectrum of the Siva and Shakti forms in Kalari becomes truly apparent. More than a mere body form, the Shakti is a form of the mind. In Shakti forms we learn how to move energy and focus on female aspects: flow, creativity and intelligence. We will conclude our final session with a short Q&A.
Gerhard Schmid is a certified senior instructor of the Kerala Kalarippayat Academy in Kannur / Kerala and teaches at his own studio in Hamburg/Germany as well in various places in the U.S. His inspiring classes are deeply rooted in his fundamental knowledge, his descriptive approach, his love to share what he was granted to discover and his great sense of humor. His ability to lead each student according to his/her individual potential makes every class an experience of growth and joy – for beginners and advanced practitioners alike. |

GRAVITY AND GRACE: Yoga for finding your inner teacher |

Time: June 7th (7-10am)
Cost: $35
Location: Sugar House Studio- 2065 East 2100 South.

Whether you are new to yoga, or a "seasoned veteran”, the fundamental challenge practice presents begins with quiet inquiry, “what can I do today to bring a little more freedom and intelligence into my life?” Strengthening this inquiry "muscle" is essential for maintaining a lifetime practice, and avoiding the obstacle of boredom found in repetitive routines. In this workshop, we will explore how body sensation, such as chronic stiffness or pre-existing injuries, can be powerful for deciphering the language of "body energy" and provide us an opportunity to overcome physical and mental blocks. You will experience how Gravity educates your body, and influences your practice through the power of surrender and simultaneous non-muscular effort. This type of work moves us away from a mentally-driven practice, strengthening our intuition and providing us with a present moment experience of our feeling centers (heart and navel). This is essential for a yoga practice which opens to the magic of Grace, and the development of your own "inner teacher". With this, a truly personal practice is cultivated, along with the wisdom borne of our own experience.
Peter Sterios is an internationally recognized yoga instructor. His teaching reflects over 30 years of study and practice in the US and India. A writer and former contributing editor for Yoga Journal, he lives and teaches in Santa Monica, California. His first yoga DVD "Gravity & Grace" was released in early 2007 is available at www.yogamatters.com |
